Smile makeovers have been gaining popularity in the past few years; nowadays, with all the technological advancements in the field of dentistry, treatments have become more effective, and results can now become apparent in an easier manner than before.
A smile makeover can change a patient’s life for the better; it can improve their social skills, their confidence, and a bunch of everyday activities such as talking, eating, smiling, etc.
The purpose of this blog is to let patients know that recreating and improving their smiles is possible and more affordable than before. Today’s technology makes it easier for dentists to follow a patient’s expectations about the outcomes of the smile makeover that they will go through.
This blog will give you an overview of what to expect out of this procedure, as well as the processes that you might have to go through if you want to get one.
Differences between a Full Mouth Reconstruction and Smile Makeover
Both of these processes aim to restore a patient’s smile, but each of them consists of using different processes that are unique to them. A smile makeover is different than a full mouth reconstruction.
A full mouth reconstruction focuses on restoring teeth functionality and feel.
A smile makeover is a smile design dentistry procedure that includes a list of different processes to help patients recreate their smile, as well as to alter it and improve it in any way that they want and desire.
A smile makeover procedure could include different processes, such as:
· Dental veneers, which is a device used to correct spacing between teeth, great alteration in tooth coloring, chipping and fissures, etc.
· Teeth whitening, which is a procedure used to clean and restore the white color of teeth;
· Tooth implants, which are post-like prostheses, are used as a base for dental crowns, which work as a replacement for damaged teeth.
When is a smile makeover necessary?
A smile makeover might become necessary for a different number of reasons. Most of the time, patients that opt to get this treatment feel unhappy with the way their smile looks, or they feel that it might not suit their facial features.
A smile makeover dentist takes into consideration what is it that the patient dislikes about their smile and what their expectations are, and works alongside them to come up with a fully personalized customization plan. This plan is generated and discussed with the patient to make sure that it will cover all of their needs and wants.
A lot of the factors that are taken into consideration when coming up with a smile design dentistry plan are:
- The spacing between a patient’s teeth and how they’re aligned;
- How many teeth are missing in a patient’s mouth;
- The proportions of each and one of your teeth and the harmony between them;
- The characterization of your teeth and how the crowns and veneers can be modified to resemble it.
What to expect out of this procedure:
The patient should always keep in mind that, in order to obtain the results that they want, they should let the dentist know what the expectations that they’ve got are. As it was mentioned before, clear communication between the dentist and the patient is key to assure great and effective results.
Before starting with any of the treatments, the dentist could ask the patient for results regarding necessary examinations. These series of tests will be the ones to determine if the patient is qualified to undergo the operation, or what steps should be avoided or replaced with others.
After doing evaluations, and basing themselves off of the patient’s expectations, the dentist will choose the correct set of methods for this procedure. With the use of CAD/CAM technology, the dentist will take some digital images and create a now-modified replica of the patient’s denture.
The aforementioned mockup is printed including all of the modifications and patient’s specifications; the dentist will let the patient try this early version of the denture to see if any changes and adjustments have to be made to it.
Once the patient is satisfied with how the mockup version of the denture looks and feels, the dentist will proceed to do the necessary series of steps to start the smile makeover.
It’s important to note that it is vital for the patient to take care of their new denture by being hygienic and following the dentist’s specifications. At this stage, the patient should be very vocal about their feelings regarding their new smile, and if their expectations were met.
If the patient experiences any post-procedure issues such as discomfort, pain, a tooth being chipped, or anything else of that matter, they should get in contact with their dentist as soon as possible. Minimal problems could become great complications in the future.
