What are Dental Veneers and their benefits?

To put this in simple and understandable words, dental veneers are like layers of material that can be made of dental porcelain or composite material. These layers improve and protect the teeth, either if they are damaged or not.

Dental Veneers are a great option for those suffering from chipped teeth, a gap between teeth, or misshaped teeth. These thin layers adhered to teeth giving them a more classical and proportioned shape and color.

As mentioned above, there are two types of dental veneer resin materials used. Composite and Porcelain material have their characteristics and benefits. Sani Dental Group dentists will guide you through the procedure helping you decide which fulfills your specific needs.

Porcelain Dental Veneers

  • Thin shell-like layer that is custom-made to fit on the tooth.
  • Strong and durable
  • Natural-looking surface
  •  Less tooth enamel removed compared to crown or cap
  • Don't stain easily

To walk you through the common process of how these veneers are placed, dentists from our Sani Dental Clinic in Playa del Carmen give us a quick summary of how it's done.

To prepare the tooth, some enamel is removed from the sides, and front of the tooth, making room for the veneer to fit in and look adequate.

After an impression (mold) is made from that same tooth, this is when the patient has explained the shade of the veneer and makes their decision.

The impression (mold) is worked on in a dental lab, custom-made to fit perfectly with your treated tooth. This process usually takes two to three days, depending on the condition of the tooth or the number of teeth being treated.

In the meantime, the dentist provides the patient with a temporary veneer to wear.

In the next visit, the veneer is placed to check if the fit is adequate.

After any adjustments, if necessary, the teeth are cleaned and the veneer is bonded to them.

  • Composite Dental Veneers
This resin is made from tooth-colored filling material bonded to the tooth.
  • Even less enamel is removed compared to crowns or porcelain veneers
  • Usually fewer visits
  • Easier to fix if damaged, but not as strong as porcelain veneers

Dr. Genaro also gave us a quick summary of the procedure using composite veneers.

After reshaping and preparing the tooth, the composite material is bonded and sculpted using a color that is best for you. Then a special light is used to harden this composite, finishing with a polish and smother procedure to make the veneer look natural.
