Elvis Presley: The King of Rock and Roll

Imagine a singer and actor, who can transcend and change generations thought of music. A singer whose music style has moved countless fans and even today has an effect in society.

In honor of one of the greatest musicians and most significant cultural icons of the 20th century is: Elvis Presley. A figure so significant and famous musicians, his titles include: "the King of Rock and Roll" or simply "the King".

Elvis Presley Past

He was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi; he was born at his parents’ two-room home an interesting fact associated with Elvis is his twin brother. Elvis Aron Presley, was born 35 minutes after his identical twin brother, Jesse Garon Presley. Unfortunately for the Presley’s baby Jesse die at birth and was buried the next day on an unmarked grave.

Fact: Elvis openly spoke of his twin throughout his life, grew up an only child.

Elvis youth was harsh and difficult, there was poverty in the family and Elvis’ father even spent time in prison. However all this change when in 1948, the Presley’s moved from Tupelo to Memphis in search of better opportunities. At this time Elvis attended Humes High School, where believe it or not he failed a music class and was considered quiet and an outsider.

After graduating high school, he worked at a machine shop as well as driving a truck before begin his music career.

Music Career

Elvis music career began in 1954, when recording at Sun Records music producer Sam Phillips ask Elvis and his crew Scotty Moore (guitar) and Bill Black (string bass) to sing the song “That’s All Right”. The recording was a success and Elvis music career began.

Presley was one of the first musicians to popularizer’s rockabilly; this is thanks to his energized interpretations and sexy provocative performances, combine with social moments occurring in the nation increase Presley popularity.

Military Service

In December 1957, Elvis was drafted into military service and on March 24, 1958, the 23-year-old was inducted into the Army as a private. Afterwards he was assigned to the Second Armored Division, attending basic training at Fort Hood, Texas. However, his military service was temporary interrupted when he took an emergency leave to visit his beloved mother, who was in poor health. Sadly, Gladys Presley died on Aug. 16, 1958 of a heart attack at the age of 46.

When Presley returned to the army he was shipped out for an assignment with the Third Armored Division in Friedberg, West Germany; here he served as a jeep driver. Also, while in Germany two interesting things occurred, 1) he continued to receive stacks of fan mail and 2) he met 14-year-old Priscilla Beaulieu, the daughter of a U.S. Air Force captain. After a lengthy courtship, Elvis and Priscilla married in 1967.

In March of 1960, Elvis was honorably discharged from active duty, while in military he achieved the rank of sergeant.

Unfortunately in 1977 at the age of 42; we lost this great actor, singer and iconic character.
