Easter

Easter is a celebration that original celebrated the resurrection of Jesus Christ; this occurs the third day after Jesus sacrifices his life for all of mankind. There has been a few new traditions add to this holiday. Among them is the inclusion of the Easter Bunny, egg hunting and Easter theme candies or chocolate.

The Easter Egg

The Easter egg has had several meaning throughout history, there uses have change in more than one occasion, but the decorate egg have become a symbol of Easter. The egg itself is associated with rebirth, new life, or fertility in many cultures.

The practice of decorating Eggs is actually ancient. Archeologist have found decorated ostrich eggs in Africa and a similar custom was used Ukrainian, here the custom is called pysanka. In Africa the decorated eggs where place in graves of ancient Egyptians and Sumerians. For Egyptians the creation of the universe involves an enormous egg. The Hindu’s believe something similar, they believe that a golden world-egg was formed before time and the universe began. With the birth of Christianity, Orthodox Christians would use decorated eggs to symbolize the renewal of life.

In the 17th century the Christian Church officially adopted the use of eggs as a symbol of resurrection; the Christian’s would stain eggs in red, symbolizing the blood of Jesus Christ and decorations like the cross. This custom has change and today the use of chocolate or plastic eggs fill with confetti. On Easter Sunday, many children wake up to find hidden eggs that the Easter Bunny has hidden.
